Can you unschool a unit study?

How do you unschool, for example, Ancient Egypt? I don't have a straight answer to that question, but I can share how my family approaches an interest in Ancient Egypt. Who isn't at least a little intrigued by pyramids, sphinxes, mummies, and jackal-headed gods?

When my kids and I approach a topic such as Ancient Egypt, we call it our Egypt project, but you could call it a unit study. In effect, we create a pile of stuff.

I don't remember when or how it began, perhaps with the discovery of King Tut, the boy king, who took the throne at nine years old, but my children have long felt drawn to anything about Ancient Egypt. Toward satisfying that interest, we've collected several books, kits, archeological simulations, websites about Ancient Egypt, and anything else that comes into view.
