A practical handbook on learning without school

People who feel drawn to the philosophical ideals of unschooling often ask how to unschool. While acknowledging that each family approaches the unschooling lifestyle from a unique standpoint, I offer the details of my family’s experiences, along with specific advice for meeting legal requirements without sacrificing your ideals.

More About the Practical Aspects of Unschooling
Unschooling simply describes living and learning without school, so let's imagine a life without early childhood education classes! In the absence of school, what do children do? They play. They do what brings them joy. They do what calls to them. They do what they need to do to get from point A to point B, learning useful skills along the way.

The unschooling approach to life, in general, describes the way we learn naturally when left to pursue our own personal interests. As unschoolers, we own our interests–our passions, dreams, and goals–and also the responsibility for pursuing and attaining them. We respond to our desires. We go after our dreams with enthusiasm.

Unschooling parents and their children live and learn together, helping each other, making discoveries, solving mysteries, and sharing adventures. Ready to have some fun?

The Ultimate Unschooling Handbook (A Must-Read For Homeschool Parents Too!) My wife and I absolutely loved this book. We're homeschool parents and have been researching various learning styles including the newest trend--'unschooling.' Sara McGrath presents a practical guide for parents to follow when choosing the 'unschooling natural learning' method for their children. She covers everything--from suggestions as to how to overcome initial fears and doubts to recordkeeping and meeting the educational legal requirements of your state. She also includes a multitude of 'unschooling' and homeschool resources for parents as well. This book is definitely a must in every homeschool family's bookshelf--whether you opt to 'unschool' or homeschool, the information McGrath offers is extremely valuable--a wonderful book! -- William D.

Ground-breaking introduction. Sara McGrath lays out a short easy to read introduction to homeschooling as well as unschooling. There are tons of resources listed in it to get your children started in a more respectful way of learning. One that doesn't promote low esteem or constantly felt like they're under a microscope. There are many delightful examples of how unschooling works. Let's face it, compulsory schooling fails because it's a directly inproportional to self-motivated learning. -- Dr. Vanish
