Free range and helicopter parenting

Free-Range Kids: Giving Our Children the Freedom We Had Without Going Nuts with WorrySince I started reading Lenore Skenazy's Free Range Kids, I've also encountered several blog posts about it. While the book is not everything I hoped it would be, it has given me some things to think about. I found particularly interesting Ms. Skenazy's ideas about how parents have changed so dramatically from letting the kids roam til dark and not allowing them to play in the yard unsupervised. Apparently, crime statistics don't confirm the common sentiment that "times have changed."

In Last Child in the Woods, I remember Richard Louv writing that an angry outburst from his son prompted the book. Apparently, his son got tired of hearing about all the wild adventures his dad had had growing up, but which he felt were sorely lacking in his own childhood.

I definitely had a free-range childhood. My kids don't, but I'm trying to gradually loosen the life grip I've had on them since their births.

Here are 2 blog posts. There were others, but I've lost track of them.

Child's Play: Free Range Surrey Ride at the Beach
